At the end of the year I tend to play a lot of music from
the old days. I used to listen to loads of pop music. This
is an album I played very very much when I was about 15
years old. 'Those who are about to die salute you' is to my
humble opinion their best album. Colosseum is the name
of the band. They played their blues and rock in a way
not many others did. I am especially thrilled by the
way John Hiseman and Dick Heckstall Smith use
their instruments. Drummer Hiseman as the
groups leader was just wonderful and Dick
Heckstall Smith who was able to play
two saxophones the same time
was simply flabbergasting.

Streetwalkers - Downtown Flyers,Vertigo 1975

I'm anxious to know, did it work for you like it worked for me ?
When I was a teenager I used to listen to pop and rock music.
Then at the end of the seventies with Bob Marley's breaking
through in Europe, we started to listen to and find out about
styles that were new to us. Reggae and African music made
an impression that changed everything. My musical interests
started to change completely and made me listen to things
I had no idea about before. Looking back now, I can say there
were periods in which I listened to Reggae in particular and periods
in which soul music was very popular. Now I'm in an African
phase and I'm sure it will develope in directions I can't tell today.
Thinking back I start to play lots of old records again, the stuff
I was fond about in the seventies. Like this one, we used to play
loads of records by these guys. Roger Chapman and Charly Whitney
are still heroes, I was crazy about this sound. It all started with
'Family' and later 'Streetwalkers' and later also with the 'Shortlist'.
Also his solo albums were popular. I'm gonna go back in time
some more in the coming period and post us a load of that sweet
old seventies pop music, hang on, there's plenty to follow.

I must have been 15 years old or so when I first heard Frank Zappa.
It was this LP and it shocked me in a pleasant way. It is a
live registration of this theatrical concert back in june
1971 at the Fillmore East. It left me with red ears back then,
still love to hear it every now and then today.

The image you see under Fillmore East's cover is
a picture of one of my other works. In my free time
I have a strange habit. I tear up magazines and make
kind of paintings with it. All types of paper actually, I cut
and tear and glue and stick and paint. This cover-image of 'Chunga's
Revenge' is about 53 centmeters, square. The outside is
completely done with pieces of paper and the center was painted.
I posted the low-res version for you, original remains in my
humble posession untill I decide else, not
at this very moment. Still considering, art-blog..,
...no art-blog.., who knows...

Mothers of Invention

If affluence and power is the Great American Dream, Frank Zappa
is the Great American Nightmare, somebody once said about the
Mother-mother. It is probably the attempt to describe the phenomenon
Zappa - Mothers of Invention that came closest. Who really needs a
rock 'n roll band engaged in musical satire in a country where there's
about a million things not going quite right, or going quite wrong as
you wish. Can you imagine now what their first album 'Freak Out' must
have meant to the American establishment in 1966. Unvarnished social
satire and plain eroticism - meant to shock, on the first rock album ever,
that was recorded as if it was a single piece of music.
And shocked everybody surely was.
The broadcasters, that refused to play one single cut of any Mothers
album. The numerous momen's associations sending in petitions to
the congress to stop these filthy Mothers from playing their town.
And theatre managers that banned them from their halls. On stage in
the old days the Mothers were wild, playing louder than anybody.
Making use of weird theatrics, pre-recorded tapes and of course an
uncanny musical sophistication. Musically those Mothers could not
be beat, blending their nostalgia for fifties' rock 'n roll, cynical inter-
pretations of situations and unlimited improvisations into Mothers-music,
exactly the way Frank wanted it of course. For those who want to relive
that early Mothers-days exitement, this Super-starshine
album is the sure way.

I guess I was around 16 years old when I first got to hear
Frank Zappa. It struck me like lightning. What a unique sound,
so different and original. This is the 2nd or 3rd I heard, and I still
love it like I did straight away. With the great George Duke and
the Phlorescent Leech & Eddie. This LP has it all, fantastic cover-
design by Cal Schenkel, a historic cover, this is the type that sticks
in your brain for ever. And Frank Zappa's genius compositions and
guitarsound make this album an unforgettable experience. Wrough.

On-U Sound Discoplates 1,2,3,4 & 6

Some of these tracks may have been posted in previous
On-U Sound albumposts but why not once again. The Discoplate
series started around 1982 and I tried to keep up buying them.
Now I am not sure if I miss the #5 or if it doesn't exist at all.
The back of #6 tells us about 1,2,3 and 4, but not 5.
So did I miss something or..? if you know, please tell us. I've put
the plates in chronological order and just left out the B-side
of #4 for circumstances. Beware of the volume, Mr. Adrian
Sherwoods basses will tear your speakers apart.

Early 80's we listened to the most bizarre bands, like this one.
I must be honest with you, this is no easy listening. I would
describe it as rough wave, punky voices with shrieky guitars.
The A-side of the album starts of with some dynamite songs,
they are the ones that sold the album. B-side gets a bit
depressed I'm affraid. Be warned, no middle of the road
material here. What you see is what you get !

This is the dubversion of Jacob Miller's LP 'Wanted',

David Thomas and the Pedestrians - The Sound of the Sand & Other Songs of the Pedestrian, Rough Trade 1981

1981, I was in a recordstore somewhere in Utrecht, I'll never
forget that magic moment. In the store they were playing this
album and when that little guitarsolo by Richard Thompson
began I was thrilled. This tiny piece of music sold me the LP.
It is half way the title-track, such a magic guitarsound I had
never experienced before. David Thomas' music is no mainsteam
material, you might have to give it a few spins before you
get it. If you like his style, try listen to 'Pere Ubu', his
other group. I saw them two years ago and they're still
a great band to see, lots of weird sound effects, very nice.
This 12" on '45' is still one of my favourites, check.

US pressing from 1981, the UK pressing on On-U Sound was
released in 1982. The first album by Singers & Players,
with Prince Far-I and Jah Woosh. Ofcourse this is another
Adrian Sherwood production. I always loved it and still do.

Removal of latest post

Dear visitor, It seems I had posted an album that I wasn't supposed
to.The Blogger Administration has removede that last post
from my page before I had the chance of doing it myself,
shame. I don't want to violate any rules and am a little
confused since the whole bloggosphere bursts of CD's and
LP's you can buy in every shop. I am trying to avoid
violating any rule. It is not the idea to hurt anybody's
business. I am now finding out what the criterium is so I
won't make the same mistake again. I am now affraid to post
so you will have to wait untill I understand the exact rules.

the Young Rascals - Groovin', Atlantic 1967

Felix Cavaliere was a Syracuse University student in 1963 and playing
with a popular campus group, Felix & The Escorts, when he was
askedby Joey Dee & The Starliters (of Peppermint Twist fame) to join
them on a tour of Europe. There, the young keyboardist met Eddie
Brigati and Gene Cornish. "We didn't want to be somebody else's
sidemen," recalled Cornish, so after a few months they left The
Starliters and, with a drummer friend, Dino Danelli, began rehearsing
together. According to Gene, "All of a sudden we hit magic in Felix's
basement. We'd all been in bands before and we just looked at each
other and went, 'woah!' It was just amazing; I can't explain it. That
day literally changed my whole life. I think we blasted through 30 or
40 songs at that rehearsal. We knew we belonged together."

On-U Sound Compilation, Various Artists - Wild Paarty Sounds Volume One, Cherry Red/On-U Sound 1981

1981 must have been a very busy year at Berry St. & The Manor,
the recording studio for the London On-U Sound label.
This superb sampler is also from '81. It gives us a taste of
the sound of several groups, all produced by Adrian Sherwood.
I particularly like the hilaric 'Things that made U.S.'
by 'Jeb Loy & the OIL Wells', but the whole album rocks.

Siren - Strange Locomotion, Dandelion 1971

A very underrated artist and one of my heroes is the late
and great Kevin Coyne. From the very first time I heard him,
I am following Kevin. He died in 2004 in Germany at the age of 60
leaving us about 30 LP's. This is an album by Siren, the band he
played in before releasing under his own name. I promise you a lot
of Kevin Coyne's music in the future. Did you know that when Jim
Morrison died,'The Doors' asked Kevin Koyne to replace him ?
He was not interested, and went on walking his own road.
Kevin Coyne never reached the fame, I think he deserved,
his latest albums are not even known by his fans because they
were released only in Germany where he lived his last days.
This is Kevin Coyne, we'll be back with more soon.

I have always been a big fan of Todd Rundgren, this is the
group he started his carreer with. My first Todd was,'A wizard,
a true star' from 1973. The recordings on this 'Best of'
are way older than that. Do you know the song 'Tighten Up'
by Archie Bell and the Drells from 1968? Track 1, 'Loosen Up'
is a parody on that song, very funny track.

Wild Tchoupitoulas - The Wild Tchoupitoulas, Antilles 1976

On this first day of Carnaval I got a message from Egraham
in New Orleans. He suggested to send me this album, which he
had barely saved from hurricane Katrina in 2005. By coincident
I just happen to have it too, so the request was quickly arranged.

In New Orleans they call Carnaval 'Mardi Gras', the girls in the
streets show their tits if you give them a present, great tradition.
Our friend Egraham wrote the comment on an album of the Meters,
these same Meters play on this LP, the whole Neville family
plus Leo Nocentelli, George Porter and Joseph Modeliste.
Produced by Allen Toussaint, this is top New Orleans material.

This is Creation Rebel, although from England, it exists mainly
from Jamaican artists. Eskimo Fox, Lizard Logan, Crucial Tony and
Deadly Headly ( Tony Bennett ) who is guest on this LP. Dubwizard
Adrian Sherwood glues it all together with his dubbing skills.

in a group and this one has it. Not only the cover is fantastic.
A personal favourite always was track 6, "Look good, get smart,

Pay Attention ! The Mothmen, On-U Sound 1981

This is the second LP on the On-U Sound label from 1981.
The Mothmen are a four person English Band, they recorded this
album in 1980 and it is one of the rare On-U Lp's, not produced
by Adrian Sherwood. It is also one of the few On-U Lp's,
not based on reggae. Side two is one track and totally
instrumental, it requires a well trained ear. Enjoy this
document in 80's UK.

I must have been about 13 years old, when my older brother
had exactly this LP and made me learn about it. I was lucky to have
2 sisters and a brother, 4, 8 and 10 years above me. They played all
types of music and I picked up lots of it. Canned Heat directly
caught my attention with 'Going up the country'. A song with very
original melody and atmosphere. I have been looking out to find
this LP for years and finally found it, just for sentimental
reasons. Still love to play it once in a while.

New Age Steppers - the New Age Steppers, On-U Sound 1981

Early eighties we got shook up by a new sound, On-U Sound it was
called. Creation Rebel, Singers and Players, and the New Age
Steppers are some of the groups formed from a much larger group,
all managed and almost directed by the Master of Sound, Adrian
Sherwood. Sherwood's effects , his bass and beats were and are of
a unique flavour. Today he also releases CD's under his own name,
but in those days he used to produce only. Players of Prince
Far-I's band and other mainly Jamaican artists dominate the sound
that is based on reggae.
This is the first of a big pile of On-U Sound LP's, soon more.

Tim Buckley - Look at the Fool, Warner Brothers Records 1974

Jeff Buckley's dad, so you know where that great voice came from.
This is Tim Buckley's last album, he died from an overdose
of heroin shortly after it. I was one of the lucky visitors of
a tiny popfestival in my hometown in 1974, where Tim Buckley
played aswell. Hearing this album, the first Buckley I bought,
changed my life. This is one of those LP's I keep playing
untill I die too. Ol'time favourite, great stuff.
